Abstract
Stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent psychological challenges among undergraduate physiotherapy students, often exceeding rates seen in other health professions. This narrative review analyzes the global prevalence, predictors, and demographic correlates of these conditions. Common risk factors include female gender, early academic years, academic overload, low social support, and financial insecurity. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for English-language publications from January 1990 to June 2025. Keywords and Boolean operators included terms such as “stress,” “anxiety,” “depression,” “physiotherapy students”, “mental health” and “psychological distress”. Eligible studies focused on undergraduate physiotherapy students and addressed prevalence, risk factors, impacts, or coping strategies, including observational studies, reviews, and meta-analyses. Studies on other populations, rare psychological disorders, or those with unclear methodology were excluded. A total of 9505 records were identified of which 21 studies were ultimately included with total number of participants of 4259.Findings highlight the critical need for institutional mental health interventions within physiotherapy programs to support student well-being and promote academic and professional success.
